Doo Wop

The song “Walk Like a Man” is a classic doo wop song from one of the best doo wop groups, the Jersey Boys, aka The Four Seasons The song, written by Bob Crewe and Bob Gaudio, beautifully balances the falsetto of Frankie Valli with the bass voice of Nick Massi. The song went to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1963. It was their third #1 hit (i.e., after “Sherry” and “Big Girls Don’t Cry”). The story behind the recording is that there was a fire in the studio while they were working. Producer Bob Crewe kept them all going, even when they smelled smoke and heard the fire engines. The recording did not stop until firemen used their axes and broke through the door to get the musicians out.

“Ooh, walk, walk, walk, walkOoh, walk like a man

Oh, how you triedTo cut me down to sizeTelling dirty lies to my friends

But my own father saidGive her up don’t botherThe world isn’t coming to an end

He said it, walk like a manTalk like a manWalk like a man my son

No woman’s worthCrawling on the earthSo walk like a man, my son

Ooh, walk, walk, walk, walkOoh

Bye baby I don’t mean maybeGonna get along some how

Soon you’ll be cryingOn the count of all your lyingOh yeah, just look who’s laughing now

I’m gonna, walk like a manFast as I canWalk like a man from you

I’ll tell the worldForget about it girlAnd walk like a man from you

Ooh, walk, walk, walk, walkOoh, walk, walk, walk, walkOoh, walk, walk, walk, walk”
